Overview Tales of the Under is an alternate universe (AU) based on the popular game Undertale. It imagines a world where several key events unfold differently, particularly the fate of Chara, Asgore, and the relationship between humans and monsters. Instead of the tragic death of Asriel and Chara's destructive plan in the original game, the AU explores a more peaceful and complex world where Chara is a caretaker of the Ruins, Gaster survives, and monsterkind fights for freedom from the underground. However, it’s not without strife. The conflict between humans and monsters intensifies as the monsters seek to break free from their prison, leading to war, loss, and eventual peace. Key Plot Points The Great War: King Asgore’s decision to break the barrier using the 6 human souls leads to a bloody confrontation with humanity. Despite early victories, the battle for the capital city of Ebonia turns the tide in favor of the humans, resulting in Asgore’s death and a subsequent struggle for survival. Gaster steps in to protect the souls and retreat with the remaining monsters. The Deicide: In an effort to save monsterkind, Asgore absorbs the 6 human souls and attacks the surface. Despite early successes, the battle turns against them with the intervention of 7 powerful wizards. The wizards ultimately defeat Asgore, though not before he sacrifices himself for the sake of his people. Aftermath and Change: In the aftermath of the war, Asriel assumes the throne as King of the Monsters, while Toriel remains the Queen. Asriel enacts new laws that ensure human children falling into the underground are cared for, signaling a shift in monsterkind’s attitude toward humans. The underground sees relative peace, though sporadic attacks from humans persist. Frisk's Return: As Frisk matures, they leave the Ruins and become involved in a complex rivalry with Chara. Frisk and their "gang" (The Friskies) engage in playful, petty beef with Chara, despite the larger, more pressing issues surrounding monsterkind. Main Cast Chara Role: Caretaker of the Ruins Personality: Chara is an enigmatic and complex individual, with a split personality that oscillates between kindness, mischievousness, and bitterness. Raised with love by Toriel, Chara inherits a deep sense of compassion, but their traumatic past and hatred toward humanity shape their worldview. They care deeply for the souls they raised and see themselves as a protector of fallen children. Appearance: Wears robes similar to Toriel’s and the same locket as before. Taller now, Chara carries a deep, wistful air of maturity despite their playful nature. Special Interests: Has a fondness for knives, chocolate, and enjoys intellectual debates with Asriel. Their favorite number is 9, which they argue represents the absolute, contrary to Asriel’s preference for 10. Relationships: Close to Asriel and still best friends despite the years. They have a strong, protective bond with Frisk, though their rivalry remains playful. Asriel Dreemurr Role: King of the Monsters Personality: Asriel, like his counterpart in the original game, is a caring individual, but his time as King of the Monsters has made him a bit more egotistical. He is a man-child in some aspects but still tries to live up to the legacy of his parents and his kingdom. Appearance: Similar to his original form but dressed in royal attire, he carries the weight of ruling monsterkind with a mix of lightheartedness and duty. Relationships: Close with Chara and continues their debates over the meaning of “absolute,” but he also struggles with the responsibilities of his role as king. Toriel Dreemurr Role: Queen of the Monsters Personality: Toriel is a bit senile and somewhat ditsy in this AU, often trying to be “hip” but failing at it. She is still kind-hearted and cares deeply for the wellbeing of the monsters and the humans who fall underground. Appearance: Aged but looks similar to her original form, still sporting her royal attire. She is much older but retains her gentle, maternal nature. Relationships: She has a strong relationship with her family, especially Asriel, and has a deep affection for Sans, who ends up marrying her after helping her recover from the loss of Asgore. Sans Role: Royal Guard (later a King’s Adviser) Personality: Sans retains his original, lazy, and sarcastic demeanor, but his experience on the battlefield has made him tougher and more resilient. He is still the same laid-back character but has a more serious side when it comes to protecting those he cares about. Appearance: Same as the original game, though more battle-worn due to his involvement in the war. Relationships: Sans’ relationship with Toriel is strong, and he eventually marries her after helping her cope with the loss of Asgore. Papyrus Role: Royal Guard Captain Personality: Papyrus is as optimistic and energetic as ever, but now with the added responsibility of being a key part of the Royal Guard. He’s serious about his role but still has time for humor and big dreams of becoming a true hero. Appearance: The same as the original game, though with some slight battle damage from his time as a soldier. Gaster Role: Mad Scientist and Mentor Personality: Gaster is driven by curiosity and a desire to understand both human souls and the mysterious forces at play. He is deeply invested in the wellbeing of monsterkind, though his mad scientist nature sometimes leads him to make questionable decisions. Appearance: His appearance is similar to the original game, though his survival has made him even more enigmatic and shadowy. He often wears a lab coat and tinkers with his strange machines. Relationships: He has a deep, somewhat strained relationship with Chara and Asriel, especially after Asgore’s death. He is a mentor to various students, including Alphys and Noelle. Frisk Role: Member of the Friskies (rival to Chara) Personality: Frisk is now an adult, full of confidence and an almost egotistical swagger. They have a booming rap career and a strong presence in the underground. Their playful beef with Chara is a running joke in the underground, akin to a celebrity feud. Appearance: Frisk retains their original look but with a more "gangsta" style, complete with streetwear and an over-the-top personality. Relationships: Frisk has a strong group of allies, including Lil Monster (Monster Kid), Susie (a tough, potty-mouthed friend), Drunk Bun (an anime-loving, drunk, middle-aged woman), and Noelle. Frisk shares a humorous rivalry with Chara that is filled with playful animosity. Notable Locations The Ruins Home to Chara, the Ruins remain a peaceful sanctuary for the children who fall from the surface. Chara is the caretaker, ensuring that the children are cared for, protected, and educated. Ebonia The capital city of the surface, where the pivotal battle between monsters and humans took place. It’s a large, technologically advanced city that was initially overtaken by the monsters before they were driven back. The Underground After the events of the war, the Underground has become a mix of tragedy, hope, and survival. While some peace has been established, there are still ongoing skirmishes as humans and monsters vie for control and resources. Themes and Concepts Escapism and Trauma: Chara’s decision to escape the surface world to the Underground serves as a central theme. Their trauma from the abuse they faced in the human world heavily influences their actions and views on humanity. Responsibility and Sacrifice: Asgore’s sacrifice highlights the theme of leadership and the burden that comes with making difficult decisions for the greater good. Asriel’s rise to power echoes this, though tempered by his more childish approach to leadership. Conflict and Reconciliation: The ongoing war between monsters and humans highlights the complexities of conflict, while the evolving relationship between the two groups underscores the possibility of peaceful coexistence, despite the lingering tensions. Future Potential
As Tales of the Under progresses, new conflicts could arise with the continued interactions between monsters and humans, the emergence of new human characters, and further exploration of the rivalry between Frisk and Chara. With the establishment of laws that protect human children, the dynamic between both species will likely evolve, with more individuals caught in the web of these complex interactions.
